I suddenly had such a craving for this song and video. It was one of my earliest BW videos, (provided by Kazaa… anybody remember Kazaa? Anyone?..) and left such an impact. The moustached happy-go-lucky hero in his silky pyjamas, the unbelievably beautiful and fresh faced heroine with the pretty eyes, the water drops, the rope skipping, the colours, the light…What’s not to love?

The soundtrack is by AR Rahman, the same guy who made the music for Slumdog Millionaire (Jai Ho!!) and it’s a duet between him and Lata Mangeshkar (the first lady of Indian music).
It’s like a dialogue between a mother and her son that presumably has died. The mother asks him where he is, she’s tired of this hide-and-seek game he’s playing with her. He tells her about what a beautiful place he’s found; there’s sunshine and nice shadows where he rests and he’s like a kite that’s able to fly freely… It’s so much better here, really.
And 2:33 basically kills me when he says: “well yes, I have everything here, it’s perfect… if it weren’t for the fact that it feels so lonely without you Mom” and it’s so amazing and I die even though I don’t understand that much Hindi but yes.
